Robert Downey Jr is getting his due as an actor after a long time, thanks to his performance in Oppenheimer. The versatile actor has managed to take home almost every trophy this award season, and it will reach its epitome if he gets the Oscar as well. RDJ has always been a fantastic actor but got a new lease of life professionally when he took on the role of Iron Man in the MCU.
However, the actor once confessed that his younger self would have passed on the offer to be an action star. Downey has earned around $435 million from his MCu career and became one of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood. He was the face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and people started liking the comic book movie genre because of him and his other Marvel colleagues, namely Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, and others.
Marvel has produced some of the highest-grossing films of all time in the history of cinema, and Robert Downey Jr. has featured in a few of them. A few years ago, in an interview with Live! Via Contact Music, where RDJ admitted that he did everything his younger self wouldn’t have done. The Oppenheimer star also revealed a time when he would rather take a bullet than do action movies.
Robert Downey Jr said, “It’s funny. I used to say that I’d welcome a bullet to the forehead if I ever ended up as a 40-year something, remarried, marketable, big-action movie dad living in a cosy cul-de-sac in suburban L.A. Now I am that guy.” He added, “It just goes to show that I usually don’t know what’s good for me in life.”
Downey played Iron Man for the first time in 2008, and he retired from the part with 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. While fans demand his return to the MCU, Kevin Feige reportedly doesn’t want to tarnish his legacy by bringing him back.
On the professional front, Robert Downey Jr hit a rough patch with Dolittle after leaving the MCU. It was released in 2020. He made a comeback with Nolan’s Oppenheimer last year. It earned a whopping $957.59 million, as per Box Office Mojo.
