Hovvdy are back, and have announced a new self-titled double album and a string of 2024 UK/Europe tour dates. The band also shared the album’s latest single, “Forever.”
Due out April 26th via Arts & Crafts, Hovvdy will be the Austin, Texas indie duo’s fifth full-length studio album, following 2021’s True Love. Spanning 19 tracks, the new album was co-produced by Hovvdy’s Charlie Martin and Will Taylor, along with Andrew Sarlo (Bon Iver, Big Thief) and Bennett Littlejohn.
Speaking about Hovvdy, Martin cited themes of family and empathy as influential factors. “It’s a full circle, because lots of my songs, in adulthood, deal with looking back and seeing your parents as just individuals struggling through life — and trying to have more empathy or understanding,” he said in a statement. “And now Will is diving in from the opposite side as a new parent, grappling with all that.”
For his part, Taylor echoed Martin’s sentiment, and explained how the duo “tried to really step back and look at: How can we convey our songwriting in a new way?” Ultimately, that new approach “challenged the songs we brought, and it challenged me to be more vulnerable,” Taylor explained. “We’re trying to stretch out and create a tapestry of everything we can do,” Martin added. Pre-orders for Hovvdy are ongoing.
The new single, “Forever,” speaks to Hovvdy’s sensitive sensibilities. The opening lines offer a reprieve — “Baby take a breather/ You know you’ve been freaking out/ How I wanna cool you off/ Like your favorite season with the windows down” — while the chorus’ hook reminds the subject of the narrator’s affection that they’ll “fall forever” in love.
“Forever” arrives alongside a music video directed by Michael Rees, starring comedians Veronika Slowikowska and Kyle Chase. Watch it below.
In support of the new album, Hovvdy are set to hit the road for an international tour, starting with a previously announced North American leg in support of Cold War Kids set to kick off at the end of this month in San Francisco; get tickets for those dates here.
Then in May, Hovvdy will hop across the pond for a tour of the UK and Europe, which will wrap in Germany in June. Tickets for the international dates go on sale this Friday, February 2nd via Ticketmaster. You can also find deals through viagogo.
“Forever” is the fourth single from Hovvdy after “Jean,” “Bubba,” and “Portrait,” the latter of which earned a mention in Consequence’s Song of the Week roundup earlier this month.
