Beyond the Boys Club is the latest addition to the Consequence Podcast Network, featuring journalist and radio host Anne Erickson of Audio Ink Radio. Spinning off from the interview column of the same name, the series highlights women and non-binary musicians as they offer their perspectives on the industry and discuss their personal experiences. For episode No. 7, Nervosa singer-guitarist Prika Amaral. Listen and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts.
Prika Amaral is at the helm of one of the biggest metal bands out of Brazil: Nervosa. With Nervosa, she’s done everything from performing at the famed Wacken Open Air festival to touring the world, playing trash-infused metal songs for nearly 15 years.
Nervosa’s latest album, Jailbreak, marks their fifth full-length. It features some of the most intense guitar work and powerful vocals we’ve heard from Nervosa so far. Jailbreak also marks the first Nervosa album with longtime guitarist and founding member Amaral on lead vocals.
Amaral says that after investing so much time and effort into the band, she thought it would bring more “peace” and stability to Nervosa to have her take on lead vocal duties, even though she was hesitant at first.
“I said, ‘Okay, I can do it,’ and then the people accepted it and accepted me as a vocalist,” she says. “I’m super happy with this position. (It feels like I’ve been) doing this for a long time. It’s crazy.”
Elsewhere in the conversation, Amaral discusses the new album Jailbreak, reflects on Nervosa’s breakthrough as an all-female band coming out of Brazil, and offers advice to young women looking to get into the music business.
