Last night, ahead of their performance at New York City’s Town Hall, four of the biggest names in Jazz–Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau, Christian McBride, and Brian Blade–played two sold-out shows at the Blue Note Jazz Club in Greenwich Village.
The performance, billed as A Moodswing Reunion–named for the Joshua Redman Quartet’s 1994 studio album MoodSwing–featured all four members and contributors on the original recording; Redman on saxophone, Mehldau on piano, McBride on bass and Blade on drums, live, defined and revived.
In MoodSwing‘s liner notes, Redman explained the record’s concept: “Jazz is about feeling, communication, honesty, and soul. Jazz is not supposed to boggle the mind. Jazz is meant to enrich the spirit… Jazz is for your heart. Jazz moves you… I just want one thing to be known: Every composition on this recording exists to evoke a mood.” After nearly 30 years since its release, the now reunited supergroup’s ability to enrich the spirit through their sound remains as vital and distinctive as ever.
