Greta Gerwig just turned 40, and to celebrate the occasion, Ryan Gosling sent the director a gift for the ages: a flash mob of dancers performing to the Barbie soundtrack.
A TikTok shows a clearly overwhelmed Gerwig taking in a group of men dancing to Gosling’s Billboard hit “I’m Just Ken” before women in pink recreate the magic of Dua Lipa’s leading soundtrack number “Dance the Night.” At the end of the clip, the director wipes away tears and hugs the performers before exclaiming, “Who are you?!” Check it out below.
As of this writing, Barbie has made over $900 million at the worldwide box office, making it the highest-grossing film directed by a woman in history. Its soundtrack — which also includes songs by Billie Eilish, Ice Spice and Nicki Minaj, and an extra Gosling number in the form of a Matchbox Twenty cover — is also a hit, entering the Billboard charts and becoming a viral TikTok sound.
Considering its success, it may seem inevitable that Warner Bros. will order a Barbie sequel. However, neither Gerwig, Gosling, or Barbie herself, Margot Robbie, signed a contract ensuring (or requiring, depending on how you look at it) more movies, and with no end in sight to the writers and actors strikes, it looks like a follow-up is in limbo.
After you’ve watched the Barbie flash mob, celebrate Gerwig’s birthday by reading our feature on the director’s unique ability to make films that make us cry and call our moms.
