A family in Louisiana was awoken by their Australian cattle dog, one of the smartest dog breeds around, and they knew something was wrong.
Upon investigating, they discovered an alligator had broken into their home using the doggy door and the swamp puppy was just as confused as the family over what it was now doing trapped inside.
The story made its way to the evening news because who doesn’t love a tale about an alligator breaking in through the doggy door?
I have been trying to cycle in the phrase ‘swamp puppy’ into my vernacular more and more lately. But I’d be remiss if I didn’t shout out Garrett Galvin of the Florida Everglades for popularizing the phrase in his videos where he ‘yoinks’ all sorts of creatures out of the water.
As for the alligator in Louisiana that entered through the doggy door, ABC News says the home was owned by a couple who recently moved to Iberia, LA from Arizona. So it must’ve come as quite the surprise to see a gator in their house.
After spotting the alligator, they called 911 who sent out animal control. They safely removed the alligator and relocated it far away from the doggy door.
It remains to be seen why the alligator sauntered through the doggy door. It has been unbearably hot throughout the South for weeks and it is certainly plausible the alligator was seeking cooler air wafting out through cracks in the door.
After the incident, the couple upgraded their doggy door to one that only unlocks/opens by interacting with their dog’s collar. Swamp puppy situation solved.
This also isn’t the first time this has happened. 12 years ago a very similar incident took place in Florida.
Keep your doors locked.
