A couple of years back, while packing for a winter trip to Chicago, I realized that none of my coats stood a chance against the city’s unforgivable bluster. I was leaving in a week and needed new, Windy City-proof outerwear—pronto. While I’d usually turn to a cadre of fashionable dudes for direction, a picture I recalled of Kylie Jenner swaddled in a Rick Owens puffer took up a lot of space on my mental moodboard. Quite literally, because this coat was huge.
The Rick joint packed some serious puff, boasting toasty, off-kilter details like a giant down-filled collar and a uniquely cropped silhouette. I felt warmer just looking at it, from the thought of both wearing it and the money necessary to cop one burning a sizable hole in my pocket. It was my dream coat, sure, but at $2,000 a pop—just shy of two months rent—I couldn’t justify the buy, even if all that puffy goodness practically rivaled my apartment in square footage. So, with Kylie as the blueprint, I set out to find a dupe.
At the time, few menswear labels had yet to embrace the fun of cropped clothing, so I cast a long line to find the perfect puffer. I landed in the pillowy outerwear heaven that is Aritzia, the Canadian retailer that’s become an authority on big coats through their signature, oft-sold-out SuperPuff. Lured to Aritzia’s webstore by their then-new men’s coat, the Mr. Super Puff, a more Kylie-esque silhouette caught my eye. The Cloud Puff had it all: a trendy, cropped shape perfect for showing off high-waisted pants; a big, comfy collar that doubled as a scarf (and makeshift neck pillow for the plane); and best of all, it didn’t break the bank at a cool $250. It brought the heat to my coat closet, spicing up my silhouettes and keeping me cozy while I nabbed a mirror selfie at The Bean.
If you’re looking to brave the cold and look hot while doing it, Aritzia’s extensive collection of puffers may be the ticket. They make it easy to goldilocks your way to a warmer winter, delivering a handful of mid and longer sizes if cropped cuts aren’t your thing. If you start feeling lost while browsing their massive selection, just stop and ask yourself: “What Would Kylie Do?” You’ll be all the warmer for it.
